FABRIC PILLING

When you buy a new fabric sofa, everything is new – new frame, webbing, zigzag springs, foam, comfort layers of fibre, and of course the fabric.

If pilling occurs on your new fabric furniture this is a normal occurrence with fabrics that are used in the manufacture of new furniture including lounges/sofas, chairs and mattresses. It is also a normal occurrence in clothing, rugs and carpets.

 WHAT IS FABRIC PILLING?

During the manufacturing process of the fabric, thousands of fibres are wound and woven together to create the fabric. Essentially pilling is excess fibres within the fabric that have risen to the surface of the fabric. They appear as loose strands or balls on the face of the fabric.

WHAT CAUSES PILLING?

The loose or excess fibres within the fabric have a natural tendency to move toward the surface when friction or rubbing occurs. This happens with normal use of furniture.

Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent fabric pilling, however it is easily treated and will not be an ongoing issue.

IS FABRIC PILLING A FAULT?

Fabric pilling is not a fault, nor is It an indication of poor or inferior quality fabric.

HOW TO TREAT PILLING ON YOUR NEW FABRIC FURNITURE

You may need to do this a number of times. After all excess fibres are removed there will not be any further pilling.

Simply use a battery powered de-pilling device when you first notice signs of any pilling on your new furniture. The de-pilling device will “shave” the fibres that have made their way to the surface and will not damage or effect the surface of the fabric in any way.

Should you require a de-pilling machine, Santosa Furniture Warehouse is happy to provide you with one to keep, free of charge.

Please contact our shop if you would like a de-pilling shaver device.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that all of the fabrics used on Santosa Furniture Warehouse lounges, chairs and sofas have undergone the Martindale rub test?

The Martindale rub test measures the durability of the fabric and the abrasion resistance of the fabric.

The fabric is pulled taut and is placed on the lower plates of the Martindale machine where small discs of wool and wire mesh are continually rubbed in a circular motion against the fabric. The test ends when 2 yarns break or there is noticeable change in the appearance of the fabric. Tests are measured in the thousands (1000’s) of rub cycles, and the fabrics are then categorised dependent on the result, and applied to different usage.

  • Decorative use – 6,000 – 10,000 rubs
  • Light domestic use – 10,000 – 15,000 rubs
  • General domestic use – 15,000 – 25,000 rubs
  • Heavy duty use – 25,000 – 30,000 rubs
  • Commercial use – 30,000 PLUS rubs

All of the fabrics used on lounges from Santosa Furniture Warehouse fall into the General Domestic through to heavy duty use – That is 15,000 to 30,000 rubs.
